Gauguin and the myth of Tahiti

Media_httpblogtateorg_ufdga

When looking at one of Paul Gauguin’s paintings of Tahiti it is easy to see why people think he was responsible for creating the myth of a paradise on earth, but in truth the idea had existed for over a century before he set foot on the island. The first European to land there was an English sea captain called Samuel Wallis in 1767.

Note: The Gauguin exhibition at Tate Modern continues until 16 January 2011.
