A digital dip into the transit of Venus

One of the most influential works on the history of the transit of Venus is Harry Woolf’s 1959 book The Transits of Venus – A Study of Eighteenth-Century Science.

Woolf gives a detailed account of the English and French expeditions of 1761 and 1769, drawing on archival records, private correspondence and memoirs.

Today, many of the publications he consulted can be accessed first hand via digital archives such Google Books, the Hathi TrustLa Bibliothèque nationale de France and others.via transitofvenus.nl

Preparations for next year’s transit of Venus are already rekindling those French-English rivalries in some corners of the globe.
